Dublin Institute of Technology Apprentice Scheme Standardises on ArtiCAD

Dublin Institute of Technology has taken the decision to standardise on ArtiCAD as the CAD design product for its Cabinet Making Standards-based Apprenticeship course run by the School of Construction. The College has purchased eighteen ArtiCAD Pro licenses, from ArtiCAD Ireland Limited, which are used by apprentices during two "off the job" training courses, spanning a total of twenty weeks.

Standards-based Apprenticeships are nationally recognised schemes which typically last for four years. Apprentices' time is structured between hands-on, on the job working and periods of training and college-based education. At the end of their four year Apprenticeship, a National Craft Certificate is awarded by FETAC.

The Cabinet Making course at Dublin Institute of Technology has been a long-standing user of AutoCAD but according to Andrew Stuart, Lecturer in Cabinet Making: "Although the product works well for some areas of our courses ArtiCAD is better suited to the more specialist needs of cabinet makers."

Having looked at a number of specialist CAD software products, ArtiCAD was selected for its flexibility and ability to be customised. ArtiCAD Pro was installed in April 2006 and has rapidly proved its worth. Andrew Stuart: "It is much faster and easier for our students to use. They can produce their first 3D image in a three hour session, whereas using AutoCAD they were still only able to do basic designs after nine weeks. Using ArtiCAD, they can produce complex 3D rendered images within nine hours and print these out to include in their portfolios."

Mr. Stuart added that another key benefit of ArtiCAD is that because it is a specialist design tool for cabinet makers and kitchen designers, it is providing apprentices with a very useful introduction to technology in use in the "real world" which they will encounter in their everyday working lives.

"Our decision to standardise on ArtiCAD represents a major investment for the Dublin Institute of Technology. Every ten weeks, we will be introducing ArtiCAD to thirty-two students and helping them to develop their future careers in the highly skilled profession of cabinet making."

    Notes for Editors

ArtiCAD software, for the design of kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices, is a powerful, flexible, fast and easy to learn computer-aided design system. It can produce working plans which automatically generate elevations, multiple 3D perspectives, photorealistic impressions, detailed parts lists and costings. A "standard" kitchen design, including a plan and 3D visualisation can be produced in just ten minutes.

Founded in 1992, ArtiCAD Limited has been, and continues to be, solely focused on the development and marketing of innovative, robust CAD software for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry. The company has more than 3,000 users of ArtiCAD in the UK alone. ArtiCAD Limited is headquartered in the UK, with subsidiary companies in Ireland, North America and South Africa.

ArtiCAD Ireland was founded in 2002. The company has a dedicated sales team for the country, and offers a wide range of manufacturers' graphics from local companies including Springhill, Uform, PWS and BA Components.
